How it works

Tongue weight is loaded trailer weight multiplied by the percentage you choose. 12% is the default planning value.

Tongue weight = loaded trailer weight × (percent ÷ 100).

Trailer Tongue Weight Calculator FAQs

Why 10 to 15 percent?

Too little tongue weight can cause sway. Too much overloads the ATV hitch and payload. Many utility trailers sit in the 10–15% band.

How do I measure tongue weight for real?

Use a tongue scale or a bathroom scale with a board and pipe. This page is only a percentage estimate.

Does cargo placement change tongue weight?

Yes. Moving cargo forward raises tongue weight; moving it back lowers it.
