ATV Towing Capacity Calculator

Manufacturer tow ratings are only part of the story. This calculator also checks remaining payload so tongue weight does not overload the ATV.

How it works

It takes the published tow rating and remaining payload after rider weight, then limits trailer load so about 12% tongue weight still fits on the ATV.

Recommended load = the lower of the manufacturer tow rating and remaining payload ÷ 0.12.

These results are estimates for planning only. They are not OEM specifications, safety certifications, or professional mechanical, legal, or financial advice.

Towing Capacity Calculator FAQs

Why isn't the answer just the sticker rating?

Tongue weight uses ATV payload. A machine can be payload-limited even when the hitch rating is higher.

Is 12% the correct tongue weight?

Many small trailers work near 10–15%. This page uses 12% as a planning default, not a hitch specification.

Does terrain change towing capacity?

Hills, mud, and braking distance all reduce what is practical. Treat this as a dry-pavement starting point.
